Brief biography of Yash Chopra

Yash Chopra was born as Yash Raj Chopra on 27th September 1932 to a Punjabi Hindu family in Lahore which is now in Pakistan.  He was youngest of eight children of Chopra family and spent most of his childhood at his elder brother Baldev Raj Chopra’s house who was then a film journalist.

In 1945 he moved to Jullundur to continue his education and after partition of India he shifted to Ludhiana in Punjab. But he was always passionate about film making which led him to go to Bombay (now Mumbai). In Bombay Yash Chopra started his career as assistant director and assisted I. S. Johar and later his producer-director elder brother B. R. Chopra and learnt basics of film making..

It was B. R. Chopra who recognized his younger brother Yash Chopra’s talent and gave him his first directorial opportunity in the year of 1959. This film was a social drama called ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ starring Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, and Leela Chitnis.

This critically and commercially successful film encouraged Yash Chopra to direct his second hard hitting social film ‘Dharmputra’ in 1961 which depicted Hindu fundamentalism and partition of India. This was the first movie featuring Shashi Kapoor in his first fully fledged role. After Dharmputra, Chopra never made any political movie as its theater screening faced  violent demonstration because of raw reconstruction of the partition riots and dialogues.

In 1965 Yash Chopra directed multi starrer film Waqt for his producer brother which was again a commercially success and received his career’s first Filmfare award in Best Director category. His collaboration with B. R. Chopra continued and he directed two more films for his banner, Dharmendra starrer Aadmi Aur Insaan, and then a a suspense movie called ‘Ittefaq’ starring Rajesh Khanna.

In the year of 1971 Yash Chopra moved one more step ahead on the path of his career and founded his own banner Yash Raj Films and became producer. The very first film he produced independently was a melodrama movie ‘Daag’. After it Chopra made some classic cult movies on scripts written by Salim-Javed and starring Amitab Bachchan as protagonist and established Bachchan as ‘Angry Young Man’ of Bollywood cinema. ‘Deewar’ and ‘Trishul’ are most notable hit movies of this collaboration and still very much popular in India. Then Yash Chopra shifted to romantic dramas from action genre and cast Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ and ‘Silsila’.

Time of 80’s was not good for Yash Chopra as many of his films were failed at box-office and he faced setbacks in professional life. But in 1989, he returned with a bang through his hugely successful classic cult film ‘Chandni’ starring Sridevi as protagonist. Chandni was the first film full of ‘Yash Chopra Style’ for which he is known for; a heroine-centric film full of romance, emotions and melodious songs shot at foreign locations, story depicting lifestyle of high class elite, and last but not the least ‘Chiffon saari’.
