Kunal Kapoor is one of few Bollywood actors who proved their talent from the very beginning of their acting career. As his surname says he is a real Punjabi munda (boy) who was born in Mumbai, the film city of India, but has his family roots deep down in Punjab. Bollywood Career of Kunal Kapoor

Kunal started his career as assistant director of Rakesh Omprakash Mehra for 2001 film ‘Aks’, starring Amitabh Bachchan , Manoj Bajpai and Raveena Tandon. He brushed up his acting skills under the training and guidance of famous theater legend Barry John who also trained superstar Shahrukh Khan in his theater days. Kunal continued his theater journey with a theater group called Motley, run by Naseeruddin Shah.

Kunal Kapoor was lucky enough that he got chance to make his debut in Bollywood movies through M. F. Hussain’s critically acclaimed movie ‘Meenaxi – A Tale Of Three Cities’ in 2004 and that too with Hindi cinema’s skilled actress Tabbu. It was not only his luck but his looks and acting ability which worked for him after this film and he was chosen to play an important role in Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s cult patriotic film ‘Rang De Basanti‘ in which he shared screen with Bollywood’s A list actor Aamir Khan, Vaheeda Rehman, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan and not to forget Atul Kulkarni.

It was Kunal Kapoor’s acting and hard work which gave him confidence to fully live up his character in front of this bunch of powerful actors and he did it so well that he not only won heart of critics but also the moviegoers. Huge success of Rang De Basanti made him an overnight sensation and Kunal received a Filmfare Award nomination in Best Supporting Actor category.

After RDB Kunal Kapoor did a film called ‘Hattrick’ which was a box office disaster. Same thing happened with his next two movies, ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’, opposite Rani Mujherjee and ‘Aaja Nachle’, opposite Madhuri Dixit. Both films were produced by YRF banner of Yash Chopra and couldn’t create magic on box office.

In 2008, Kunal Kapoor  accepted a cameo in Ranbir Kapoor starrer film Bachna Ae Haseeno, in which he played a simple introvert husband. He was again appreciated for this small but important role.

Kunal Kapoor is very selective about his films and the characters he plays in it. He did a movie called ‘Lamha’ after two years, directed by National Award-winning director Rahul Dholakia. Once again he received critical acclaim for his good work in it. After it, this Kapoor boy played an important in Don 2, starring Shahrukh Khan in lead role. Now in 2012 his latest movie is ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana in which he is paired with Huma Qureshi.

In the list of Upcoming movies of Kunal Kapoor there is a movie named Doga which is most awaited by his fans since very long. It was announced by Anurag Kashyap that he is going to make a movie on Doga, one of Raj Comics’ famous characters and Kunal Kapoor will play the title role. All his fans are eagerly waiting to see him in and as Doga.

He also lend his voice for the Indian god Rama in Mahayoddha Rama, an animated mythological movie based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, directed by Raizada Rohit Jaising Vaid.   • Meenaxi – A Tale Of Three Cities (2004)
    It is a critically acclaimed movie by ace artist Maqbool Fida Hussain (also known as M. F. Hussain) after Gajgamini. Tabu, Kunal Kapoor and Raghuveer Yadav are the lead actors of the film. Tabu played the title role of Meenaxi where as Kunal played Kameshwar Mathur, one of the characters created by Nawab (Raghuveer Yadav) who is a writer in the film. Meenaxi – A Tale of Two Cities couldn’t perform well at box office and shelved badly but its music became popular specially Chinnamma Chilakkamma song.
  • Rang De Basanti (2006)
    Rang De Basanti was the second film of Kunal kapoor’s acting career in which he played two characters, first one is Aslam, an young muslim guy of present time, and the second was Ashfaqullah Khan, an freedom fighter during Indian independence movement. Rang De Basanti was a box office success as well as criticaly successful and won many awards in various categories. This was a story of some students of University of Delhi who are living an aimless life. These guys are  Daljit “DJ” (Aamir Khan), Aslam Khan (Kunal Kapoor), Karan Singhania (Siddharth Narayan), and Sukhi Ram (Sharman Joshi).

    Their lives take a U turn when a British girl Sue McKinley (Alice Patten)arrives at Delhi and meets them for her documentary about Indian independence movement. Sue cast them in her documentary as four freedom fighter of the freedom movement of India along with Laxman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni), a political party activist. During the shooting all five realizes that their lives are similar to the characters they are playing for Sue’s documentary. When their best buddy  Ajay Singh Rathod (R. Madhavan), a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force is killed in a plane crash they become rebel like freedom fighters and fight for their right but get killed at the end when they conveyed their message to the nation. Rang De Basanti tops the list of Kunal Kapoor movies and known for his best performance till yet.

  • Hattrick (2007)
    Hattrick is a Milan Lutharia direted 2007 Bollywood movie which depicts life of some characters in a hospital. It features actors such as Kunal Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Nana Patekar,  Rimi Sen, and Danny Denzongpa as principal characters. Hot actor John Abraham made a guest appearance and well-known cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle also appeared as himself in Hattrick. Kunal played Saby aka Sarbjeet Singh in it. The film was declared a flop at box office.
  • Laaga Chunari Mein Daag – Journey Of A Woman (2007)
    Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is a 2007 movie directed by Pradeep Sarkar under the Yash Raj Films banner. Rani Mukerji, Jaya Bachchan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kunal Kapoor and Anupam Kher played main characters of the film. The film is story of a Benaras girl called Vaibhavari Sahay, affectionately called Badki (Rani Mukerji). She leaves her city and moves to Mumbai to persue her dreams and to support bad financial conditions of her family but becomes a call girl.How she falls in love with Rohan (Abhishek Bachchan) and returns back to her roots in Benaras is the rest of the story. Kunal played Vivaan Varma, a creative director who actually has no idea how the rest of India lives or functions. Vivaan is younger brother of Rohan and is in love with Shubhavari Sahay (Konkona Sen Sharma) who is younger sister of Vaibhavari. Laga Chunari Mein Daag was a box office dud in India but was however more successful in overseas market.
  •  Aaja Nachle (2007)
    Aaja Nachle is a 2007 movie which is termed as Madhuri Dixit’s comeback movie after a six years long break from Bollywood films in which she was cast in lead role with other actors such as Konkona Sen Sharma, Akshaye Khanna, Kunal Kapoor, and Jugal Hansraj in pivotal roles. The film received mixed reviews but Madhuri Dixit’s magic did not work at box office and movie joined the list of flop movies of 2007. Kunal Kapoor portrayed Imran Pathan in Aaja Nachle.
  • Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008)
    Bachna Ae Haseeno a rom-com by directed by Siddharth Anand starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu, and Minissha Lamba in key roles. Kunal Kapoor played an introvert husband of Mahi (Minissha Lamba) who is unable to express his love to his wife. The film was a hit and all Kunal Kapoor fans liked his cameo.

    Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is the latest released film of Kunal Kapoor opposite Huma Qureshi. It is said to the the first food movie of Indian cinema. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana was shot in Ludhiana, Punjab.
