In the long list of Bollywood’s star sons, a name who made his own identity very fast is Abhay Deol. He is an Indian actor and producer. Though Abhay belongs to prestigious and popular Deol family of Bollywood but he is completely different and known for his own acting style. He is nephew of Hindi cinema’s first angry He-man Dharmendra and cousin of Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Esha Deol who are also actors. All three Deols, Dhamrendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are known for their action movies and loud dialogue delivery but Abhay Deol has something different from his family actors which makes him unique.
Abhay Deol was born as Abhay Singh Deol on 15 March 1976 in a Punjabi Sikh family. His father’s name is Ajit Singh Deol who is younger brother of Dharmendra and mother’s name is Usha Deol. He lives in his own apartment in Mumbai but he is very close to his family and shares a strong bonding with all Deols. Abhay is romantically involved with long time girl friend Preeti Desai who is also an actor and made her film debut in a 2011 movie, Shor In The City. She was selected as Miss Great Britain in 2006.
Acting Journey of Abhay Deol
Abhay Deol only likes to work in movies with real element, not just in every single Bollywood masala movie. He admitted in one of his interviews that he became part of cinema not because of his family background but as he really had a keen interest in acting. He was a part of theater plays since his school days. He was 18 when he decided to be a part of Indian cinema but waited for 10 years as he wanted to get into movies after his education. Abhay Deol debuted in Bollywood with 2005 film ‘Socha Na Tha‘ opposite newcomer Aisha Takia. Socha Na Tha was produced by his uncle Dharmendra under his banner Vijayta Films. The film was not a super hit but Abhay not only impressed film critics but also made a genuine fan following by his simple and refreshing acting.
Abhay Deol’s second movie Ahista Ahista came in 2006 in which he was cast opposite Soha Ali Khan (sister of Saif Ali Khan). Then he became part of a 2007 multi-starrer movie ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.’ which was a box office success and put Abhay’s acting career a step ahead. In same year he delivered two more good film, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, and Manorama Six Feet Under. Abhay Deol won Best Actor Award for Manorama Six Feet Under at Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York City where the movie also won Best Film Award as well.
In 2008, film Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! made him extremely popular among moviegoers but it was Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D which not only increased his fan following but also made him film critics’ favorite actor. Times of India’s critic Nikhat Kazmi gave Dev D a perfect five out of five stars in her review and praised Abhay Deol for his nice piece of acting.
After this huge success Abhay did an Indian road movie in 2009 called “Road, Movie” and once again stole praise of critics. In 2011, he was cast in a big budget multi-starrer film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara with talented actors such as Hritik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar but he was not over-shadowed by them and lived his character with full confidence. He shared screen with Emraan Hashmi for the first time in 2012 movie Shanghai. Abhay Deol’s latest released film is Prakash Jha’s Chakravyuh.

- Socha Na Tha (2005)
2005 film Socha Na Tha was not only the first film of its leading pair, Abhay Deol and Aisha Takia, but also debut movie of director Imtiyaz Ali. Movie was produced by Abhay’s uncle Dharmendra. Socha Na Tha is a story of two young hearts, Viren (Abhay Deol) and Aditi (Ayesha Takia) who are introduced by their families for marriage but Viren is not ready for this marriage as he wants to marry his girlfriend Karen, a christian girl. Aditi’s aunt feels insulted by Viren’s denial and creates tension between both families.
But destiny has some other plans for Aditi and Viren.They meet and a quick bond develops between them during Goa trip. Viren and Aditi fall in love with each-other but no one says so. Confused Viren gets engaged with christian girl Karen after some problems but then only he realizes that it’s Aditi whom he loves actually. He goes to Aditi and proposes her for marriage but she refuses for her family. Viren says sorry to Karen and tells her whole thing. Now Aditi is getting engaged to someone else. Karen goes to Aditi and tells her they she is not marrying Viren as he loves Aditi. Finally Aditi elopes with Viren and later they come back and apologize to their families.
- Ahista Ahista (2006)
It is a 2006 Hindi movie directed by Shivam Nair starring Abhay Deol and Soha Ali Khan as leading pair along with Shayan Munshi. The film was inspired by White Nights, a short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Abhay Deol played role of Ankush Ramdev who acts as a witness in Delhi’s marriage registrar bureau for his bread and butter.
- Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007)
Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. is a multi-starrer film by debutant director Reema Kagati which has six parts. Abhay Deol portrayed character of Aspi who is actually a superhero. But he is unknown to the fact that Zara (Minissha Lamba), his wife is also a superhero. They seem to a perfect couple among all six couples on that Honeymoon trip. But one day when they had their first fight, the secret of their superhero identities is revealed to each other.
- Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007)
Hindi crime drama film Ek Chalis Ki Last Local was directed by Sanjay Khanduri in which Abhay Deol was cast opposite Neha Dhupia as lead pair. It’s an interesting story of call center employee Nilesh Rastogi (Abhay Deol) who misses last local train at 1:40 and meets Madhu (Neha Dhupia) who is actually a call girl. the story revolves around these two characters, how they fall in dangerous situations in a night in Mumbai. After these dangerous two and half hours Nilesh lands up with 2.5 crore booty and a drop-dead gorgeous prostitute Madhu.
- Manorama Six Feet Under (2007)
Manorama Six Feet Under is a 2007 Indian thriller movie of neo-noir directed and co-written by Navdeep Singh. It’s a story of lies, deceit and murder, and features Abhay Deol, Gul Panag and Raima Sen in lead roles. Abhay played role of Satyaveer Singh Randhawa (Abhay Deol), a public works engineer who is also an aspiring writer with a pseudo name. Satyaveer gets trapped in bad situations and at the end he finds out a hidden disgusting truth which lies six feet under the land of Lakhot.
- Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008)
Dibakar Banergee directed film Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is a movie inspired by a real life thief Devinder Singh alias Bunty. Abhay Deol played the title role of Lucky, an extremely charismatic and fearless confident thief who first socialized with the rich people of Delhi and then robs them blind. The film received positive reviews of critics and was a below average grosser. But viewers loved Abhay Deol as super-chor Lucky. All the songs of movie became popular.
- Dev D (2009)
Anurag Kashyap directed film Dev D is a modern-day adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s famous classical Bengali novel Devdas. Unlike the novel Dev D is set in contemporary Punjab and Delhi instead of Bengal. Abhay Deol portrayed title role of Dev Singh Dhillon alias Dev D which is actually modern-day Devdas. Kalki Koechlin’s character Chanda aka Leni is a modern adaptation of Chandramukhi and also inspired by a real life MMS scandal victim. Mahi Gil played modern-day Paro called Paro in Dev D. Film was a box office success as well as its music and also well received by critics. This is the best film of Abhay Deol’s career till date and a must watch for all his fans.

After its release in Toronto Film Festival on 18 September 2009 ‘Road, Movie’ was released in India on 5th March 2010.

- Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a Indian coming-of-age film which is directed by Zoya Akhtar (daughter of Javed Akhtar) and produced by her brother Farhan akhtar. Abhay Deol was a part of its ensemble cast including Hritik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar, Kalki Koechlin and played the role of a wealthy young man Kabir, one of the three key characters of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The movie was shot at beautiful locations of Spain, India, the UK and Egypt.

Shanghai is a Deebakar Banargee directed political crime thriller which is based on French movie called ‘Z’. First time Abhay Deol teamed up with Emraan Hashmi and superbly played role of T. A. Krishnan, a south Indian.
- Chakravyuh (2012)
2012 film Chakravyuh is a political thriller by director Prakash Jha featuring Abhay Deol, Arjun Rampal in lead roles and Manoj Bajpai, Anjali Patil, Esha Gupta as supporting cast. Chakravyuh mainly deals with the issues of Naxalites. An honest SP Adil Khan (Arjun Rampal) sends his friend Kabir (Abhay Deol) as his informer among Naxalite group leading by Rajan (Manoj Bajpai) so that he can catch Rajan by help of Kabir.
Kabir informes his friend Adil about the activities and plans of Naxalites. But later when he sees them and their mission closely he became a part of that with new name Aazad. In the conflict with his friend Adil, Kabir is killed by Adil’s IPS officer wife Rhea Menon.
Abhay Deol Upcoming Movies 2013
Singularity is an upcoming English language epic romance time travel adventure movie by director Roland Joffé which is an impossible tale of love set against the backdrop of the first Anglo-Maratha war and revolves around four key characters. Bollywood actors Abhay Deol and Bipasha Basu are cast along with English actors Josh Hartnett and Neve Campbell in lead roles. Abhay is playing Udaji and Bipasha is portraying Tulaja Naik in Singularity.
- Rock the Shaadi (2013)
Rock the Shaadi is Abhay Deol’s upcoming hindi zombie comedy movie opposite Genelia D’Souza in 2013. Navdeep Singh is the director of the film who earlier worked with Abhay in Manorama Six Feet Under. Abhay Deol’s girlfriend Preeti Desai is also there in Rock The Shadi and doing a cameo. The film was earlier titled as Shaadi Of The Dead but producer was not happy with the title so he challenged entire team of film to suggest a more suitable and appealing title. It was Abhay who suggested the new title. Rock The Shaadi is expected to release on 8th February 2013.

- Abhay has started his own production house called Forbidden Films and the very first film he produced is Basra in which he is also acting as a lead. He learned the Israeli martial art form Krav Maga for the role.
